Getting Started Using the Library: Home

This guide will help you learn how to access library resources and services.

About this guide

Welcome to OCC Library!

Whether this is your first time using the library or you have used the library before and need a refresher, this guide is a great place to start!  In this guide learn about:

  • Searching for books
  • Searching for articles
  • Searching for videos
  • Searching for market research
  • Citing in MLA or APA
  • and a variety of other library resources and services

When in doubt, ask one of the OCC Librarians!  We are here to help you!

How do I Checkout a Textbook?

The library has a large textbook reserve collection.  What does this mean?

  • textbooks can be checked out for 2-hours
  • these textbooks can only be used within the library
  • there is a copy machine and book scanner so you can make copies of the pages in the book you need
  • Need to take the book to class?  Copy/scan those pages/chapter you need and take those to class with you instead of the full book (just think: less to carry!)
How do you find if we have your textbook?
  1. Start at the library website, click on Search the Library
  2. Type in the title of your textbook and select Textbooks from the dropdown menu in the search bar
  3. If the title you are looking for appears in the result list - we have it!  Look for the Call Number (looks something like TXT 690) and write this down.
  4. Now head to the Circulation Desk and ask for that call number. They will check out the book to you.
  5. Can't find it? Still have questions?  See the librarian at the Reference Desk.

Is My Textbook Free Online?

Check the library catalog or free textbook list. Use the "Available Online" filter to see online books in the library search.
