What is Islam?

Islam is a monotheistic religion, meaning that there is just one god, Allah. Adherents are called Muslims. There are approximately 1.9 billion Muslims in the world. Islam was formed in in the early 600s C.E. when Muhammad began to receive revelations from God.

Sacred Works

quran kareem logoThe sacred text for Muslims is called the Quran (or Koran.) According to Quran.com, "The Quran is the final revealed message which complements and completes earlier revealed scriptures, just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the same essential message as the many prophets before him, including Adam, Noah, Moses, Abraham, and Jesus (peace be upon them all). The Quran clarifies what humanity needs to know from now until the Day of Judgment."

The Quran is written in formal style called Classical or Quranic Arabic. While is can be read in English or other languages, these are considered "interpretations" since the art of translation is never exact. It is divided into 114 surah (or chapters) which are further divided into verses.

Prominent figures

Muhammad was born around 570 C.E. When he was about 40 years old, Muhammad began to receive revelations from God through the angel Gabriel.

Divisions/Communitites

There are two different major branches in Islam. The split began with a disagreement about who would be the religious leader after the death of Muhammad. The Sunnis believed that the community should choose the next leader while the Shias believed that Muhammad had named his son-in-law as his successor. Today, the vast majority of the world's Muslims are Sunni. They make up approximately 87-90% of the Muslim population. The Shias make up the remaining 10-13%.
