Course Description

This course will teach research skills to prepare you for college, the workplace, and your personal life. This hands-on class builds skills in the areas of: identifying research topics, understanding the types of information, developing search strategies and techniques, evaluating information, and citing sources. This course will be beneficial for students who wish to develop lifelong learning skills and ways to sift through the immense amount of information available in the world.

Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Identify and access credible library and information resources.
2. Evaluate the credibility of information by using the SIFT Method.
3. Correctly cite sources in standard citation styles.

LIBR A100 & LIBR A100H: Library Research & Information Competency

This course will build research skills and knowledge that will prepare you for academic research at OCC & upper division courses wherever you transfer!

Identify & Access Credible Sources
Learn to differentiate & use scholarly and non-scholarly sources; develop search strategies; and search a variety of library resources
Evaluate Information
Build skills to evaluate: mis-or dis-information; for perspective/bias, authority, & purpose; with lateral reading
Citing, Paraphrasing, & Avoiding Plagiarism
Develop skills to: cite sources in-text and create reference lists; paraphrase; and avoid plagiarism

 

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to college level research and the effective use of traditional and online library resources and other online research tools. Classwork emphasizes applied experience with research planning, search strategies, critical evaluation of research sources, ethical uses of information, and documentation of sources following standard citation styles. Recommended for students who plan to transfer to a four year university to prepare them for academic research in upper division classes.

Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Enrollment Limitation: LIBR A100; students who complete LIBR A100H may not enroll in or receive credit for LIBH A100.
