Getting Started Using the Library: Textbooks

This guide will help you learn how to access library resources and services.

Finding Textbooks

How do I Checkout a Textbook?

The library has a large textbook reserve collection.  What does this mean?

  • These are books which a professor has assigned for a class to use
  • Textbooks can be checked out for 2-hours
  • Textbooks can only be used within the library
  • There is a copy machine and book scanner so you can make copies of the pages in the book you need
  • Need to take the book to class?  Copy/scan those pages/chapter you need and take those to class with you instead of the full book (just think: less to carry!)

How do you find if we have your textbook?

Either:

  1. Start at the library website, click on Search the Library
  2. Type in the title of your textbook and select Textbooks from the dropdown menu in the search bar
  3. If the title you are looking for appears in the result list - we have it!  Look for the Call Number (looks something like X 123 or TXT 456) and write this down.

Or:

  1. Ask for help at the reference desk.
  2. If the title you are looking for appears in the result list - we have it!  The librarian will give you a slip of paper with the Call Number (looks something like X 123 or TXT 456)

Then

  1. Now head to the Circulation Desk and ask for that call number. They will check out the book to you.
  2. Can't find it? Still have questions?  See the librarian at the Reference Desk.

Is My Textbook Free Online?

Check the library catalog or free textbook list. Use the "Available Online" filter to see online books in the library search.
